We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Automation Engineer/Specialist to design, develop, and implement automation solutions for enterprise IBM Z environments. This role involves extensive use of REXX, JCL, scripting, and various IBM automation tools to enhance efficiency, availability, and recovery across critical Mainframe platforms.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, implement, and maintain automation solutions for IBM z/OS environments.
Develop and maintain REXX, JCL, CLIST, shell scripts, and other Mainframe automation utilities.
Configure and support IBM System Automation for z/OS (SA z/OS) for automated start-up, shutdown, monitoring, and recovery.
Support and administer IBM Z NetView or equivalent automation platforms.
Develop event-driven automation for system messages, alerts, and operational exceptions.
Automate repetitive Mainframe operational activities including health checks, system monitoring, and housekeeping.
Support enterprise workload automation and scheduling platforms.
Develop automated monitoring, alerting, and remediation solutions.
Integrate Mainframe automation with ITSM, monitoring, event-management, and DevOps platforms.
Support automation across Mainframe technologies including z/OS, CICS, Db2, IMS, MQ, storage, network, and security.
Identify manual operational processes and implement automation, orchestration, and self-healing solutions.
Perform troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for automation failures.
Develop and maintain automation for system monitoring, log analysis, and reporting.
Support modern automation technologies such as Ansible, Python, Git, REST APIs, Zowe, and CI/CD tooling.
Participate in DR exercises, resiliency testing, and system recovery activities.
Maintain automation standards, source-code repositories, technical documentation, and SOPs.

Requirements

Strong hands-on knowledge of Mainframe automation and z/OS operations.
Proficiency in REXX, JCL, CLIST, and scripting.
Experience with IBM System Automation for z/OS (SA z/OS) or equivalent automation products.
Experience with IBM Z NetView or equivalent operations/automation tools.
Knowledge of Mainframe message processing, event automation, monitoring, and automated recovery.
Knowledge of z/OS system commands and console operations.
Experience with TSO/ISPF.
Experience with enterprise workload scheduling and batch automation.
Experience with automation for job monitoring, restart, recovery, alerting, and exception handling.
Knowledge of z/OS, JES2, USS, and core Mainframe operational concepts.
Experience with automation integration with CICS, Db2, IMS, MQ, storage, network, and security environments.
Experience with source-code and automation lifecycle management.
Familiarity with Incident, problem, change, and release management.
Strong troubleshooting and root-cause-analysis skills.
Experience with operational documentation and automation governance.
Relevant hands-on experience in Mainframe automation engineering, z/OS operations, system programming, scripting, or infrastructure automation.
Experience developing and maintaining REXX, JCL, CLIST, or other Mainframe automation solutions.
Experience supporting business-critical enterprise Mainframe environments with high availability and operational-resiliency requirements.
Experience with System Automation, NetView, workload scheduling, event automation, monitoring, or equivalent enterprise automation platforms.
Experience automating operational processes, monitoring, recovery, scheduling, reporting, and repetitive infrastructure activities.
Experience integrating Mainframe platforms with enterprise automation, DevOps, monitoring, ITSM, or orchestration solutions.
Experience working within structured ITIL-based Incident, Problem, Change, and Release Management processes.

Desired Qualifications

Exposure to IBM Z System Automation Operations REST Server / APIs is advantageous.
Exposure to enterprise scheduling tools such as IBM Workload Scheduler, Control-M, CA 7, TWS, ESP, or equivalent is advantageous.
Exposure to Ansible and IBM z/OS Ansible collections is advantageous.
Exposure to Python, shell scripting, and USS automation is advantageous.
Exposure to Zowe CLI and APIs is advantageous.
Exposure to Git and source-code management is advantageous.
Exposure to REST APIs and API-based automation is advantageous.
Exposure to CI/CD and DevOps platforms such as Jenkins, GitHub, GitLab, or Azure DevOps is advantageous.
Exposure to Mainframe monitoring and observability tools is advantageous.
Exposure to integration with ITSM, event-management, monitoring, and AIOps platforms is advantageous.
Exposure to CICS, Db2, IMS, IBM MQ, RACF, Mainframe Network, and Storage automation is advantageous.
Exposure to automated IPL, disaster recovery, resiliency, and recovery orchestration is advantageous.
Exposure to Infrastructure-as-Code and configuration-management concepts is advantageous.
Exposure to AIOps, predictive operations, intelligent event correlation, and automated remediation is advantageous.
Exposure to Mainframe modernization and integration with hybrid-cloud and enterprise automation platforms is advantageous.
Strong analytical, scripting, and problem-solving capability.
Ability to independently identify automation opportunities and translate operational requirements into reliable automation solutions.
Strong understanding of Mainframe operations, system dependencies, monitoring, recovery, and workload-management concepts.
Ability to troubleshoot complex automation, scheduling, scripting, and operational issues.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Comfortable working with global Mainframe infrastructure, operations, application, DevOps, monitoring, security, and vendor teams.
Strong focus on automation, reliability, operational efficiency, resiliency, standardisation, and continuous improvement.
Ability to balance automation and autonomous recovery with appropriate operational controls, governance, and change management.
