At Microsoft, the Azure Global Networking team is seeking a Principal Cloud Network Engineer to design and build the next generation of planetary-scale networks. This role involves owning significant parts of the multi-year architecture, driving hardware disaggregation, and leading the integration of automation and robotics into physical network construction and maintenance. The position emphasizes technical leadership and innovation across optical, packet, and control layers, with a focus on AI-driven engineering and safe change management.

Ansvarsområden

Own significant parts of the multi-year architecture for Azure's global network across optical, packet, and control layers.
Design network architecture to allow independent evolution of capacity, topology, and protection, preventing single changes or failures from impacting the entire backbone.
Drive the transition from vendor-integrated systems to open, interchangeable building blocks like merchant silicon and open network operating systems (e.g., SONiC).
Define requirements, evaluate platforms, and collaborate with silicon vendors, ODMs, and optical suppliers to influence their roadmaps.
Advance the programmable optical layer by integrating optical circuit switching, protection switching, coherent transport, and novel fiber technologies.
Define interfaces, telemetry, and control models for software to interact with the physical optical layer.
Identify and pilot automation and robotics applications to improve the speed, safety, and consistency of physical network construction and repair.
Utilize and extend network simulation, digital twins, and lab automation for pre-deployment validation of architectures, capacity plans, and changes.
Apply AI and agents to engineering processes including design, qualification, deployment, and operations.
Lead technical initiatives across Azure engineering, hardware, supply chain, operations, and external partners.
Mentor engineers, elevate the technical standard, and communicate trade-offs clearly to diverse stakeholders.

Krav

Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation.
OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 4+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation.
OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 6+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation.
OR equivalent experience.
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
Must pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

1+ year(s) deep expertise in at least one of the following, with working fluency in at least one other: Optical networking and photonics (DWDM, coherent transmission, optical line systems, optical switching, fiber and cabling); Large-scale network architecture (routing, traffic engineering, backbone/datacenter networks); Infrastructure software and systems (controllers, distributed systems, automation, simulation, robotics).
1+ year (s) disaggregated a network or optical system, deployed a software-defined network or optical controller at scale, brought a new optical technology into production, or automated physical infrastructure work.
1+ year(s) experience with optical circuit or protection switching, coherent pluggables (e.g., 400ZR, 800ZR), open line systems, or novel fiber.
Experience with merchant silicon, white-box platforms, or open network operating systems such as SONiC.
Experience with robotics, machine vision or mechatronics applied to hardware manufacturing, test, datacenter or field operations.
Experience building network simulation, digital twins, or capacity and failure models.
Experience applying AI or agentic systems to infrastructure design, operations or automation.
Experience working with silicon vendors, ODMs, optical suppliers or contract manufacturers on multi-year roadmaps.
Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, Go, C++ or Rust.

Förmåner

Typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $142,800 - $274,800 per year.
Specific higher range applicable to San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area: USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
