Microsoft Quantum is seeking a Mechanical Designer specializing in Cryomechanical Systems to drive product ownership from conception to completion. This hybrid role involves hands-on design using CAD, creating detailed drawings, managing Bill of Materials, and collaborating with suppliers to advance quantum computing hardware. The position requires a strong background in physics or engineering and experience with cryogenic environments.

Ansvarsområden

Own end-to-end 3D CAD for cryogenic subassemblies and integrations, including cold fingers, mK and 4K stages, radiation shields, vacuum interfaces, and cable/harness routing fixtures.
Create detailed 2D drawings with GD&T and tolerance stackups.
Build and steward top assembly and Bill of Materials (BOM), managing part numbering, ECO/ECR workflows, and PDM/PLM tools (SolidWorks, Windchill, OnePDM).
Lead Cryomechanical Engineering (CryoME) design reviews using standard packages.
Translate system requirements into mechanical specifications for thermal anchoring, heat-load budgets, CTE mismatch management, vacuum sealing, vibration isolation, RF/DC cable management, and integration.
Create SOPs with detailed work instructions for installation, data recording, and effective communication.
Drive DFM/DFX with suppliers by generating build packages, supporting fabrication, approving first articles, dispositioning nonconformances, and capturing as-built changes.

Krav

Master's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field OR Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years of experience in industry or R&D environment OR equivalent experience.
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
Microsoft Cloud Background Check required.
Citizenship & Citizenship Verification required for access to export-controlled information.
Proven record creating complete 3D models from scratch and releasing production-grade drawings (Creo preferred).
Mastery of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and tolerance analysis for precision assemblies.
PDM/PLM proficiency for configuration control and BOM accuracy (Windchill, OnePDM or similar).
Design review leadership and clear documentation practices.
Non-Conformance tracking, dispositioning, and execution of corrective actions.

Doctorate in Physics, Engineering, or related field OR Master's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of experience in industry or R&D environment OR Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of experience in industry or R&D environment OR equivalent experience.
1+ year of experience integrating hardware inside dilution refrigerators across temperature stages, including mK through 300K, thermal modeling or anchoring, and harnessing for RF or DC lines.
1+ year of experience using FEA or thermal simulation tools such as ANSYS Mechanical or COMSOL.
1+ year of hands-on cryogenic, vacuum, or UHV hardware experience.
1+ year of experience partnering with suppliers or manufacturing teams.
1+ years of experience operating within regulated or high-security lab environments and collaborating across distributed teams or sites.
Experience contributing to inclusive, cross-disciplinary engineering teams.
1+ Years Documenting, dispositioning and providing corrective action for hardware non-conformances.
Ability to leverage AI tools to drive innovation and efficiency.
Ability to work in an 'AI-first' environment using modern AI tools to accelerate discovery through hardware development.

Förmåner

The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $102,100 - $202,200 per year.
For specific work locations within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.
Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
