Construction, Engineering & Trades · Civil & Industrial Engineering · Mechanical Engineering

In short

This thesis work focuses on simulating residual stresses from welding using FEA software. The role is for a Master's level student in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Mathematics, with a focus on finite elements. The position is temporary and on-site in Braås, Sweden, starting Spring 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Join the department of VPD (virtual product development) at Volvo Construction Equipment.
  • Calculate the residual stress distribution originating from the welding process for typical fillet welds.
  • Use FEA software like ANSYS, LS-DYNA or similar for welding simulation.
  • Evaluate residual stresses using coupled thermal mechanical analysis.
  • Solve multi-physics problems including solid mechanics and heat transfer.

Requirements

  • Suitable Background: Mechanical Engineering or similar, applied mathematics.
  • Include courses in Finite Elements.
  • Thesis Level: Master
  • Documentation in English
  • Number of Students: 1-2

Desired Qualifications

  • Interest in mathematics, physics, and problem-solving.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions.
  • Work with next-gen technologies and collaborative teams.
  • Gain expertise in vehicle simulation, structural and vibration analysis, and data analytics.
