Thesis work: Influence of propeller pressure pulsations on hull vibrations and structure-borne noise

Technology, Data & Digital · Software & Web Development · Software Engineering

In short

This thesis work at Volvo Penta in Göteborg, Sweden, focuses on investigating how propeller pressure pulsations affect hull vibrations and structure-borne noise. The student will conduct literature studies, FE modeling, and acoustic simulations to compare vibration contributions and potentially develop a simplified calculation method.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate how propeller pressure pulsations transfer into the boat and contribute to hull vibration and structure-borne noise.
  • Conduct a literature study on propeller pressure pulsations, hull vibration, and noise, including the added-mass effect.
  • Perform FE modeling of an example hull and map CFD pressure results onto the structure.
  • Compare the vibration contribution from pressure pulsations versus the gearbox path.
  • Develop a simplified method for accounting for the phenomenon, if feasible.
  • Perform acoustic simulation of the engine room.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of solid and fluid mechanics
  • Knowledge of Finite element method
  • Knowledge of Structural dynamics and vibrations
  • Knowledge of Acoustics
  • Knowledge of Hydrodynamics
  • Master (30 ECTS points) level thesis
  • Fluent in Swedish or English

Desired Qualifications

  • Preferred masters program: Applied Mechanics

Benefits

  • Opportunity to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions.
  • Work with next-gen technologies and collaborative teams.
  • Gain experience at a world-leading supplier of engines and power systems.
  • Access to CAE and NVH departments with simulation models and measurement capabilities.
  • Work at the Volvo Penta Marine Test Center.
