Master Thesis: Concept Development for Extended Steering and Tilt Range in Sterndrive Systems

Construction, Engineering & Trades · Civil & Industrial Engineering · Mechanical Engineering

In short

Develop and assess concepts for extended steering and tilt ranges in sterndrive systems, focusing on safety and reliability. This Master's thesis requires mechanical design, CAD, kinematics, and engineering mechanics skills. The role is temporary and on-site in Gothenburg.

Responsibilities

  • Develop concepts for larger steering and tilt angles in sterndrive systems.
  • Assess benefits, technical risks, and further development needs of design concepts.
  • Utilize criteria including achievable angular range, structural strength, durability, manufacturability, serviceability, and impact on steering and propulsion performance.

Requirements

  • Mechanical design and CAD skills for modeling assemblies, checking clearances, and developing concepts.
  • Understanding of kinematics and mechanisms related to drive movement through steering and tilt ranges.
  • Knowledge of engineering mechanics to assess loads, stresses, and potential failure points.
  • Experience in structured concept development, including generation, comparison, and justification against requirements.

Desired Qualifications

  • Useful additional experience in finite-element analysis or other simulation tools.
  • Useful additional experience with hydraulics and steering systems.
  • Useful additional experience in marine propulsion, transom assemblies, or corrosion and marine environments.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions.
  • Work with next-gen technologies and collaborative teams.
  • Gain experience in a global industrial company (Volvo Group).
