Microsoft seeks a Software Engineer II to build transformative AI-powered applications for education. This hybrid role requires UI engineering skills, a growing full-stack and AI mindset, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to create intuitive and accessible user experiences. You will contribute across the entire engineering lifecycle, from ideation to production, and explore emerging technologies and AI-assisted development tools.
Responsibilities
- Build and ship frontier AI-powered experiences across Web, Windows, and Mobile.
- Experiment with emerging AI technologies, models, agents, and new interaction patterns.
- Create delightful, high-quality, responsive, accessible, and inclusive user experiences.
- Design efficient, reusable front-end systems and architecture.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Applied Science, and engineering partners.
- Own product features end to end, from discovery and prototyping through implementation, testing, experimentation, rollout, telemetry, production health, and iteration.
- Build across the stack when the product requires it, including service and API integrations, data contracts, authentication, AI orchestration and grounding, experimentation, telemetry, and production diagnostics.
- Use AI as part of the engineering workflow, applying AI-assisted tools and agentic development approaches.
- Bring a frontier and growth mindset to the team, sharing ideas, learning quickly, challenging existing approaches, contributing to engineering excellence, and embodying Microsoft’s culture and values.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, JavaScript, or Python, OR equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: Required upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Desired Qualifications
- 3+ years of software development experience developing web applications using JavaScript or TypeScript and a modern frontend framework such as React.
- Professional experience designing, developing, and shipping high-quality software.
- Experience building responsive and accessible web applications using TypeScript, React, or similar technologies.
- Experience developing object-oriented applications or services using C#, Java, C++, or a similar language.
- Experience designing or integrating APIs and working with distributed cloud services.
- Experience with public cloud services, including Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, GitHub Copilot CLI, Claude Code, or comparable tools.
- Ability to evaluate AI-generated output for correctness, maintainability, security, privacy, and licensing considerations and to apply appropriate human review before use.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues in web applications or online services.
- Effective written and oral communication and collaboration skills.
- Discipline in applying modern software engineering practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and releasing.
