Master Thesis: Development of Method for Prediction of Tooth Interior Fatigue Fracture in Gears

Manufacturing & Production · Production & Assembly · Manufacturing Engineering

In short

This Master thesis project at Volvo Group focuses on developing a method to predict Tooth Interior Fatigue Fracture (TIFF) in gears, particularly those used in electric vehicles subjected to alternating loads. The work involves literature study, analysis of test data, method development, and validation, with opportunities for further testing.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a literature study on TIFF fracture and similar failure mechanisms.
  • Evaluate and analyze results from prior performed tests, potentially using statistical analysis methods.
  • Develop a method for evaluating the risk of TIFF, considering the multiaxial stress state in the subsurface material.
  • Validate prior performed test data against the developed method and possibly a representative FE-model.
  • Potentially perform further bending fatigue tests to expand sample space and validate the developed method against new test data.

Requirements

  • Master student in Engineering Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mechanics or equivalent.
  • Positive attitude, willing to learn, disciplined, good communication skills, humble, result oriented.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with statistical analysis methods.
  • Familiarity with FE-models.
  • Interest in gear bending-fatigue tests and failure mechanisms.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions.
  • Work with next-gen technologies and collaborative teams.
  • Gain expertise in gear design, fatigue testing, and failure analysis.
  • Contribute to a global company committed to sustainability and net-zero goals.
