Master Thesis: Demand Forecasting
Logistics, Sales & Operations · Supply Chain & Transport · Logistics Management
In short
This Master's thesis project focuses on evaluating and managing demand forecasting performance based on its overall business impact, rather than solely on forecast accuracy. You will develop a framework to differentiate forecast methods, granularity, and effort across product-customer segments and time horizons, identifying the optimal point where improving accuracy yields the greatest business benefit.
Responsibilities
- Investigate how demand forecasting performance can be evaluated and managed based on its total business impact.
- Develop a conceptual and practically applicable framework for determining criteria for forecast methods, opinions, granularity, and review effort across product-customer segments and time horizons.
- Identify suitable performance metrics to govern the criteria for different product-customer segments and time horizons.
- Determine the point at which improving forecast accuracy further costs more than the resulting business benefit.
- Conduct research potentially combining a literature review with empirical analysis of historical forecasting and supply-chain performance data.
- Apply relevant methods such as statistical analysis, forecast-error decomposition, segmentation analysis, cost-benefit analysis, simulation, and interviews with stakeholders.
- Produce a final framework to support decisions regarding where to increase, maintain, automate, or reduce forecasting effort.
Requirements
- Suitable background in Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Data Science, Business Analytics, Economics, or a related field.
- Knowledge of forecasting, statistics, optimization, and data analysis is advantageous.
Benefits
- Outstanding opportunity to use your skills and imagination to push the boundaries of what's possible.
- Chance to build solutions never seen before to some of the world's toughest problems.
- Challenging work in a team of diverse innovators.
- Be part of a company that champions diversity and inclusion.
