Thesis Work: Prediction of Distortion due to Welding in Traction Converters

Construction, Engineering & Trades · Civil & Industrial Engineering · Mechanical Engineering

In short

This thesis project focuses on developing a computational method to predict welding-induced distortions in Alstom's traction converters. The work involves welding simulation, structural analysis, and validation, aiming to create a design tool for early prediction of weld distortion. The project is based in Vasteras, Sweden.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a finite element (FE) calculation method for predicting welding-induced distortion.
  • Integrate welding simulation with structural analysis.
  • Validate the computational approach through experimental measurements.
  • Create a design tool for engineers to predict weld distortion.
  • Conduct thermomechanical simulation to determine residual stresses.
  • Perform small deformation analysis and eigenvalue analysis for buckling load and distorted shape.
  • Carry out incremental large deformation analysis.
  • Potentially use the blinding hole drilling method to measure residual stress distribution.

Requirements

  • Background in Mechanical engineering.
  • Understanding of structural design.
  • Understanding of weld joint analysis.
  • Familiarity with FEA tools.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Systems thinking mindset.
  • Master's degree project (20 weeks).

Desired Qualifications

  • Understanding of structural requirements of railway vehicle bodies, e.g. EN 12663-1.
  • Knowledge of weld modeling methods recommended by literature and across different industries.
  • Ability to scale weld load from weld simulation to structural analysis.
  • Ability to accurately determine both critical buckling load and distortion magnitude.
  • Thesis can be written in Swedish and/or English.

Benefits

  • Possibility to work from our office.
