Microsoft is seeking Research Interns to work on next-generation document intelligence systems. This internship focuses on investigating new models and learning techniques for understanding complex multimodal document content, collaborating with researchers and engineers to advance AI capabilities. Candidates should have a strong machine learning research background and an interest in multimodal AI, computer vision, or NLP.

Responsibilities

Investigate new models and learning techniques that advance the state of the art in document understanding.
Collaborate with researchers and engineers to evaluate new ideas at scale and translate research advances into practical AI capabilities.
Pair with mentors and collaborate with other Research Interns and researchers.
Present findings and contribute to the vibrant life of the community.
Be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a Doctorate Degree program in Computer Science, STEM, or a relevant field.
Experience conducting research in document intelligence, document understanding, multimodal AI, computer vision, natural language processing, or related areas.
Experience with large language models, vision-language models, or other multimodal foundation models.
Experience developing machine learning systems using Python and modern deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
Demonstrated ability to define research questions, design experiments, establish evaluation methodologies, and analyze experimental results.
Proficient written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting research findings through papers, technical reports, posters, or presentations.
Submit a minimum of two reference letters, a cover letter, and any relevant work or research samples.

Desired Qualifications

Prior research experience demonstrated through publications at peer-reviewed conferences or journals, research internships, or significant research projects.
Experience collaborating with researchers and engineers to translate research ideas into prototypes or practical AI systems.

Benefits

Base pay range: USD $6,810 - $13,480 per month (higher in SF Bay Area and NYC: $8,920 - $14,610 per month).
Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
