Master´s thesis – Failover readiness validation for redundant industrial networks

Technology, Data & Digital · IT Infrastructure & Security · Network Administration · Software Engineering

In short

Investigate how to assess and predict the readiness of redundant routers in industrial automation networks for a Master's thesis. The student will survey existing protocols, design a monitoring agent, develop a scoring method, and validate it on a lab testbed.

Responsibilities

  • Survey existing redundancy mechanisms in industrial networks and identify readiness information gaps.
  • Design a lightweight probing agent to collect readiness indicators without interfering with operational traffic.
  • Develop a readiness scoring model to combine indicators into a single health score.
  • Validate the solution on a lab testbed with degradation scenarios, evaluating accuracy, overhead, and response time.

Requirements

  • Motivated Master's student.
  • Academic background in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Network Engineering.
  • Knowledge in computer networks (routing protocols, Ethernet, TCP/IP).
  • Programming skills in C/C++ or Python.
  • Basic statistics or machine learning knowledge.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with common industrial communication protocols.
  • OPC UA knowledge is a plus.

Benefits

  • 30 ECTS/högskolepoäng (hp) credit.
  • Spring 2027, typically Jan-June.
  • Possibility for hybrid workplace.
