Master's Thesis, 30 hp, ECTS: Orbit Information-Based Motion Compensation for Satellite-Based Passive Radar

Technology, Data & Digital · Software & Web Development · Software Engineering · Data Science

In short

This Master's thesis project at Saab in Göteborg, Sweden, focuses on developing and comparing signal processing methods for satellite-based passive radar systems. The goal is to create a simulation model and investigate motion compensation techniques to improve target detection, evaluating sensitivity to orbit information errors and comparing different processing approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Create a simulation model for satellite, target, and receiver, including propagation path differences.
  • Generate reference and surveillance signals with controllable noise and uncertainty.
  • Model signal delay and Doppler shift for satellite and target trajectories.
  • Develop compensation methods for signal path length and Doppler shift changes.
  • Evaluate sensitivity to errors in orbit information.
  • Compare conventional range-Doppler processing with advanced approaches (e.g., window-based method).
  • Identify when motion compensation and geometric constraints improve detection performance.
  • Compare achievable performance with known orbit information versus signal-based estimation.
  • Investigate when external orbit information is necessary versus signal-based estimation.
  • Produce a reproducible simulation environment.
  • Compare detection probability, estimation accuracy, and computational cost.

Requirements

  • Student in the final stage of a Master of Science program in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Undertaking a 30 ECTS master's thesis project.
  • Interest in signal processing, modeling, and algorithm development.
  • Solid programming skills in MATLAB or Python.
  • Basic understanding of probability theory, statistics, and communication systems is beneficial.
  • Must pass a security vetting.
  • Potential additional obligations on citizenship may apply for positions requiring security clearance.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with radar systems.
  • Experience with satellite geometry.
  • Experience with OFDM.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges.
  • Collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists.
  • Gain invaluable practical experience.
  • Make a tangible contribution to company growth and development.
  • Support and guidance to translate theoretical knowledge into practical solutions.
  • Be a driving force behind technological advancements.
