Thesis Work on Investigating converter-driven instability in MVDC grids

Construction, Engineering & Trades · Civil & Industrial Engineering · Electrical Engineering

In short

This thesis focuses on investigating converter-driven instability in MVDC grids, particularly in multi-terminal and AC-DC parallel networks. The goal is to develop models, identify causes of instability, and evaluate mitigation measures for MVDC grid design.

Responsibilities

  • Develop dynamic and small-signal models of a representative MVDC grid.
  • Identify the various causalities of instability and the key parameters that determine stability margins.
  • Evaluate mitigation measures and derive guidelines for stability assurance of MVDC grid design.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in solving emerging real-world problems.
  • Background in Electrical Engineering with focus on Power Systems or Power Electronics.
  • Good knowledge of control theory.
  • Good programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink or Python.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in power system modelling (e.g. small-signal analysis) in PSCAD / PowerFactory is desirable.

Benefits

  • 5 months duration.
  • 30 ECTS credits.
  • Opportunity to work at ABB Corporate Research.
