Thesis Work - AI-Assisted Machine Connectivity for Brownfield Production
Technology, Data & Digital · Data, AI & Analytics · Machine Learning · Data Engineering · Embedded Systems
In short
Undertake a thesis project focused on AI-assisted machine connectivity for brownfield production environments. Investigate AI methods to translate heterogeneous PLC signals into standardized production information, develop a prototype for mapping, and evaluate its effectiveness. This temporary student position is ideal for those with backgrounds in automation, computer science, or AI interested in industrial automation and smart production.
Responsibilities
- Identify relevant production information and define a common data model.
- Map the current process for identifying, interpreting, and integrating PLC signals.
- Investigate suitable AI approaches for analyzing PLC signals, tag information, documentation, and production events.
- Develop a prototype method for proposing mappings between machine-specific signals and standardized production variables.
- Evaluate the approach on selected machines with different PLC structures and documentation levels.
- Assess mapping accuracy, required engineering effort, expert involvement, and transferability.
- Investigate how validated mappings could be implemented through a soft PLC, edge solution, or similar standardized connectivity layer.
- Provide recommendations for AI-assisted signal mapping to support scalable machine connectivity.
Requirements
- Suitable background in Automation engineering.
- Suitable background in Computer science / artificial intelligence.
- Suitable background in Embedded systems or control systems.
- Relevant background combining automation, software, AI, and manufacturing.
- Interest in the intersection between industrial automation, artificial intelligence, machine connectivity, and smart production.
- Must be a Bachelor's or Master's student.
Benefits
- Opportunity to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions.
- Work with next-gen technologies and collaborative teams.
- Gain experience in AI, machine learning, and industrial automation.
- Thesis work at Volvo CE Eskilstuna or Arvika.
- Possibility for 1-2 students (2 preferred).
