As a Software Engineer on the Engineering Thrive Insights team at Microsoft, you will design and operate data-driven Python services to enhance the engineering experience for thousands of Microsoft engineers. You will work with data platforms, metrics, and developer tools, leveraging AI coding assistants and gaining expertise in areas like dimensional modeling and developer productivity frameworks.
Responsibilities
- Design and operate data-driven Python services to measure and improve the engineering experience.
- Shape data products like ThriveIQ and Data Flywheel.
- Deep dive into data engineering, dimensional modeling, agentic AI, and privacy-by-design metric APIs.
- Utilize AI coding assistants in daily workflow.
- Work with internal stakeholders to determine customer/user requirements for features.
- Create and implement extensible and maintainable code, considering diagnosability, reliability, and maintainability.
- Apply coding patterns and best practices, including generative AI.
- Build knowledge, share new ideas, and identify engineering tool gaps to improve software developer tools.
- Reuse open source or internal code where applicable and responsible.
- Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), working on-call to monitor systems and respond to degradation or downtime.
- Ensure security and privacy needs of the customer are understood and advocated for.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
- Must pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years.
Desired Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
- Experience with dimensional modeling and analytics engineering (e.g., star schemas, medallion architecture, semantic layers).
- Experience with analytical query languages like SQL, KQL (Kusto Query Language) and Azure Data Explorer, or similar analytical query languages.
- Experience developing applications on Spark-based big data platform technologies such as Databricks.
- Experience building REST APIs or MCP servers with web application frameworks.
- Experience building or integrating with LLM-powered tools, AI agents, or MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers.
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and production monitoring/observability.
- Quantitative aptitude and ability to reason about metric definitions, data quality, and statistical validity.
- Familiarity with developer productivity metrics and frameworks (e.g., DORA, SPACE, or similar).
- Experience collaborating with data & applied scientists.
- Demonstrated effective use of AI coding assistants in daily development.
Benefits
- Typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $85,400 - $168,100 per year.
- Specific work locations (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area) have a base pay range of USD $111,100 - $183,700 per year.
- Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
