Microsoft AI is seeking a Principal Applied Scientist to advance the next generation of search using large language models. This role involves leading initiatives, applying advanced ML techniques, and driving product opportunities by integrating cutting-edge AI research into scalable search systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead major initiatives leveraging expertise in advanced research methodologies and applied techniques.
  • Review business requirements and incorporate research insights to achieve strategic goals.
  • Provide direction on data and machine learning model strategies for complex problems.
  • Support onboarding of new team members and develop academic collaborators.
  • Advance LLM post-training and alignment techniques to improve reasoning, safety, controllability, and factual grounding.
  • Develop and optimize retrieval, ranking, and relevance systems for LLM-powered search experiences.
  • Architect and refine RAG pipelines to enhance retrieval fidelity and reduce hallucinations.
  • Translate research into production through experimentation, analysis, and collaboration with engineering.
  • Drive scientific rigor via hypothesis-driven experimentation and reproducible methodologies.
  • Collaborate across research, engineering, product, and design to shape long-term strategy.
  • Contribute to a culture of innovation by sharing learnings and mentoring peers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related experience; OR Master's Degree AND 6+ years related experience; OR Doctorate AND 5+ years related experience; OR equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of experience coding in Python, C++, C#, C or Java.
  • 6+ year of industry experience applying Machine Learning techniques.
  • Experience building and improving large scale Machine Learning system for search, ads, and recommendation, adopting LLM.
  • Research background on Machine Learning, LLM and NLP.
  • Proficient problem solver: ability to identify and solve novel problems.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years related experience; OR Doctorate AND 8+ years related experience; OR equivalent experience.

Benefits

  • Base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $165,600 - $296,400 per year.
  • Base pay range in San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area is USD $220,800 - $331,200 per year.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
