Master Thesis: Security and Performance Aspects of Using WebAssembly (WASM) in Embedded Systems

Technology, Data & Digital · Software & Web Development · Embedded Systems · Software Engineering

In short

Master's thesis research on the security and performance of WebAssembly (WASM) in embedded systems. Investigate WASM's efficiency, overhead, and sandboxing effectiveness compared to native binaries on platforms like Raspberry Pi, ESP32, or ARM Cortex-A, aiming to develop best practices for secure deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate how WebAssembly performs and provides security in embedded systems with limited CPU, memory, and storage resources.
  • Explore runtime overhead of WASM engines (Wasmtime, Wasmer, WAMR) in constrained environments.
  • Assess effectiveness of WASM sandboxing and memory safety mechanisms against threats like buffer overflows and code injection.
  • Analyze trade-offs between performance optimization and strong security isolation.
  • Review current research on WASM security and performance.
  • Benchmark WASM applications against native C/C++ implementations.
  • Measure CPU utilization, memory consumption, execution latency, throughput, and energy efficiency.
  • Assess sandboxing and isolation mechanisms through controlled security tests.
  • Compare lightweight WASM runtimes based on footprint, compile-time options, and scalability.
  • Develop best practices or architectural recommendations for secure and efficient WASM deployment in embedded systems.
  • Present the results at the conclusion of the thesis.

Requirements

  • Master’s student in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Interest in embedded systems, WebAssembly, software security, and performance evaluation.
  • Programming experience in C/C++.
  • Interest in benchmarking and experimental analysis.
  • Comfortable researching technical topics and presenting findings clearly.

Benefits

  • Outstanding opportunity to use skills and imagination to push boundaries.
  • Be challenged in a team of diverse innovators.
  • Work towards crafting what comes next.
