Master thesis: FE-model of perforations in corrugated board

Construction, Engineering & Trades · Civil & Industrial Engineering · Mechanical Engineering

In short

Master student wanted to develop a finite element (FE) model for simulating the tearing of perforations in corrugated board packaging. This research project, a collaboration between RISE and DS Smith, involves literature study, experimental testing, model development, and validation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a finite element (FE) model of perforations in corrugated board packaging.
  • Simulate the tearing process that occurs during opening.
  • Conduct literature study on modelling of damage, fracture, and tearing.
  • Perform experimental testing of perforation opening and tearing behaviour.
  • Calibrate and validate the FE model against experimental results.
  • Analyze model performance and provide recommendations for perforation design.
  • Write a final report summarizing the methodology and key findings.

Requirements

  • Master student within solid mechanics, lightweight structures, or equivalent.
  • Strong background in numerical analysis, modelling, and simulation.
  • Experience with commercial FE software is essential.

Desired Qualifications

  • Research activities in close collaboration with industry.
  • Work closely with researchers from both RISE and DS Smith.
  • Support in project start-up and development of numerical and experimental methods.

Benefits

  • Thesis carried out at RISE in Kista.
  • 30 ECTS credits.
  • Stipend awarded for approved work.
