In short

This Master Thesis project at Saab Dynamics involves setting up a concept-level finite element model of projectile firing in Ansys LS-DYNA using S-ALE methodology. The work focuses on investigating suitable modelling strategies and providing practical recommendations for representing complex physical phenomena in weapon systems.

Responsibilities

  • Set up a concept-level finite element model of a complete projectile firing event in Ansys LS-DYNA.
  • Utilize S-ALE methodology where appropriate for fluid-structure interaction and gas-driven events.
  • Capture main physical phenomena including propellant burning, projectile propulsion, counter mass/gas flow, projectile-barrel interaction, and recoil.
  • Study relevant modelling approaches and evaluate suitability for different parts of the firing event.
  • Conduct a literature review on S-ALE methods and firing-event simulation approaches.
  • Investigate Ansys LS-DYNA capabilities for coupled structural and gas-dynamic simulations.
  • Develop a concept-level simulation model.
  • Evaluate modelling strategies for propellant behavior, projectile motion, counter mass/gas flow, rifling interaction, and recoil response.
  • Perform pre-processing and model preparation using Ansys Discovery and Ansys Mechanical.
  • Post-process results in LS-PrePost and script using Python or MATLAB.
  • Compare modelling approaches based on physical representativeness, numerical robustness, computational cost, complexity, and suitability for concept studies.
  • Produce a structured assessment of suitable modelling principles and recommendations for Saab Dynamics.

Requirements

  • Student studying Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Applied Mechanics, Computational Mechanics, or a similar program.
  • Approaching the end of master’s studies.
  • Plan to start thesis work during spring 2027.
  • Interest in numerical methods, finite element analysis, and structural mechanics.
  • Ability to pass a security vetting.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with finite element method is beneficial.
  • Experience with CAD geometry handling is beneficial.
  • Experience or interest in Ansys LS-DYNA or similar simulation tools.
