Construction, Engineering & Trades · Skilled Trades · Welding
In short
Volvo Construction Equipment seeks students for a thesis on developing lightweight and cost-effective welded structures by integrating structural optimization with advanced manufacturing methods. The role involves concept development, analysis, and evaluation from both product and manufacturing perspectives, with a January 2027 start date.
Responsibilities
- Develop and evaluate concepts for lightweight and cost-effective welded structures.
- Combine structural analysis, weld and joint design, and manufacturing optimization.
- Study representative welded structures and identify optimization opportunities.
- Develop alternative concepts for plate thickness, weld size, joint geometry, penetration, and joint preparation.
- Use structural and fatigue analysis to dimension and compare concepts.
- Evaluate manufacturing aspects like welding effort, material usage, productivity, and automated post-weld treatment.
- Experimentally investigate selected joint and welding concepts.
- Apply and verify promising solutions on a physical demonstrator.
- Provide recommendations for future design and industrial application.
- Work closely with specialists in structural analysis, welding, design, fatigue, materials, manufacturing, and automation.
Requirements
- Studying within Mechanical Engineering, Structural Mechanics, Welding Engineering, Production Engineering, or Materials Engineering.
- Interest in lightweight design, structural analysis, welding, fatigue, and manufacturing.
- Ability to combine analytical, numerical, and experimental methods.
- Understanding of trade-offs between structural performance, weight, cost, and manufacturability.
- Willingness to work in a cross-functional environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with simulation, calculation methods, welding, or experimental testing is an advantage.
- A team of two students with complementary backgrounds is particularly suitable.
Benefits
- Opportunity to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions.
- Work with next-gen technologies and collaborative teams.
- Develop knowledge in lightweight design, structural analysis, welding, and manufacturing optimization.
- Gain experience of cross-functional engineering.
- Opportunity to work closely with specialists from various technical disciplines.
