In short

Volvo Penta is seeking 1-2 M.Sc. students for a master thesis on Digital Twin modeling of an IoT-enabled PMSM marine propulsion drive for prognostics and health monitoring. The thesis, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, involves developing models in MATLAB/Simulink and investigating key parameters for degradation indication. Preferred start is January-February 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Develop PMSM motor drive models using MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape Electrical for marine propulsion.
  • Identify useful electrical, mechanical, and thermal measurements for IoT-based monitoring of PMSM-drive degradation.
  • Investigate if residuals between the physical PMSM drive and its digital twin can provide earlier indication of degradation than conventional alarm thresholds.
  • Assess if degradation trends can be used to generate a useful health indicator and predict maintenance intervention needs.
  • Implement the IoT/digital-twin architecture without compromising safety-critical local PMSM control in marine propulsion.

Requirements

  • M.Sc. student in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electric Machines and Drives, Power Electronics, Motor Control, Sensor Technology, Engineering Physics, Machine Learning, AI & IoT.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB / Simulink / Simscape.
  • Ability to work 2-3 days per week in Gothenburg at Volvo Group Penta Technology.

Desired Qualifications

  • Focus on emerging motor drive topologies for electric propulsion.
  • Interest in sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions.
  • Experience with digital twin modeling, IoT architecture, condition monitoring, and degradation trending is beneficial.

Benefits

  • A great working environment at Lundby facilities.
  • Flexible working environment and focus on positive work-life balance.
  • Opportunities for personal development and building a career with passion for engineering.
  • Experience at a stimulating, fast-paced, quality-driven e-Mobility center.
