Thesis Work - Digital Factory (layout planning)

Construction, Engineering & Trades · Civil & Industrial Engineering · Industrial Engineering

In short

Scania offers a thesis work opportunity focusing on the Digital Factory, specifically in layout planning. This project involves multi-objective optimization of line-side material presentation and factory layouts, utilizing PFEP datasets to generate configurations and optimize station-level resource placement. The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science/AI, or Production Engineering, with a focus on optimization, algorithms, or simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Review the PFEP rack generator and previous layout optimization framework.
  • Formulate the station- or area-level problem.
  • Implement suitable optimization methods.
  • Compare optimized solutions with a PFEP baseline in an industrial case.
  • Evaluate quality, robustness, and computational performance.
  • Define a traceable, user-approved PFEP change set for article reassignment, rack reconfiguration and resource relocation.

Requirements

  • Master's in Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science/AI, Production Engineering or similar.
  • Focus on optimization/OR, algorithms or simulation.
  • Ability to develop and evaluate a multi-objective approach for jointly reconfiguring and positioning PFEP-generated line-side resources.
  • Preserve PFEP traceability and return accepted results as structured PFEP change proposals.
  • Understand constraints including geometry, package fit, access and material-flow rules.
  • Understand objectives including worker well-being, material flow or walking, logistics handling, area use and reconfiguration effort.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with PFEP datasets.
  • Familiarity with virtual factory environments.
  • Knowledge of multi-objective optimization techniques.

Benefits

  • Build relationships for the future with Scania.
  • Opportunity to gain experience in Digital Factory planning.
  • Work on a project with direct industrial application.
