Microsoft is seeking a Senior Hardware Systems Engineer for their Cloud Hardware Systems Engineering team to develop systems and modules for Azure Cloud. This role involves planning, designing, and executing system validation for cutting-edge HW solutions, driving automation, and collaborating with OEMs/ODMs.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and execute system validation plans and test frameworks for state-of-the-art HW solutions.
  • Drive continuous improvement in testing, validation, and debug methodology through automation and AI.
  • Work with OEMs/ODMs and system engineers on system validation, SKU qualification, scale testing, and debugging.
  • Perform hands-on validation and debug work in the laboratory with test engineers.
  • Identify, triage, and resolve server subsystem faults, driving root cause analysis and implementing fixes.
  • Develop automation and tooling for server validation in collaboration with other teams.
  • Develop application/system software, libraries, and drivers to interface with firmware/hardware devices.
  • Handle DevOps responsibilities, including occasional on-call duties for production issue resolution.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Electrical/Computer Engineering or related degree.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in server systems/platforms development and validation.
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in server hardware validation architecture, test infrastructure development, test case writing, automation, and test execution.
  • 2+ years of experience in programming languages like Python/PowerShell for automation development.
  • Solid understanding of hardware, firmware, and OS interfaces and interdependencies, CPU/GPU architectures, and system design concepts.
  • Strong technical communication skills.
  • Understanding of OTD (Observability, Testability, and Debuggability).
  • Familiarity with PCIe, memory subsystems, networking, power management, and device management.
  • Experience with performance benchmarking tools (SPEC workloads, Linpack, AI workloads).
  • Experience defining custom HW tools for validation or debug.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and debugging skills with hands-on experience in debug and measurement tools (Logic Analyzers, Oscilloscopes, PCIe analyzers).
  • Experience developing benchmarking/system software tools with C/C++.
  • Experience in one or more platform domains (Security, CXL, PCIE, Networking, Storage, Performance, Power Management, RAS, Platform Debug).
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux internals.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in evaluating hardware designs, HW/FW/OS interactions, platform config trade-offs, and E2E error flows.
  • Experience in debugging complex system level issues related to board hardware, thermal, and firmware components.
  • Experience with data analytics, data collection/aggregation, and dashboarding.
  • Ability to trace issues across firmware, drivers, and OS.
  • Familiarity with one or more system level protocols (ACPI, I2C, PCI).
  • Functional knowledge of secure boot, attestation, FW update & recovery on server platform architectures.
  • Experience in platform HW and FW security capabilities (RoT) and implementations.
  • Familiarity with FW support for secure update and secure recovery.
  • Experience in platform level test architecture and usage of debug tools like (ITP, Arium, ARM JTAG tools or equivalent).
  • Volume hardware test and debug expertise.
  • Knowledge of Python or other scripting languages will be an addon.
  • System level perspective, hardware & software interaction.
  • Collaboration, drive for results.
