ABB is seeking an R&D Engineer in Richmond, VA, to contribute to the mechanical design of critical power equipment. This hybrid role involves designing, testing, and documenting new or enhanced models, collaborating cross-functionally, and participating in cost reduction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to mechanical design deliverables (design and documentation) for new or enhanced critical power equipment models.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to deliver high-quality designs meeting customer expectations and project requirements.
  • Participate in design reviews, provide feedback, and make necessary modifications.
  • Design and release mechanical prototypes, support fabrication, and lead improvement processes.
  • Lead product design improvement opportunities to reduce product cost.
  • Convert conceptual designs into engineering documentation and maintain existing products.
  • Work with various business areas (production, supply chain, service) to ensure products meet business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, product development, or product design.
  • Knowledge of solid modeling CAD design software (Solidworks, etc.).
  • Collaborative, solution-focused approach with strong written and spoken communication skills.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal design, detail part drawings, assembly drawings, and design for manufacturing.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experienced in thermal and structural evaluation.
  • PLM software is a plus.
  • Experience interpreting and applying electrical safety standards (UL/IEC, etc.) is a plus.
  • Project Management experience with hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus.
