Microsoft is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to contribute to the design and delivery of next-generation engineering infrastructure for Microsoft Fabric. This role involves advancing AI and automation in the software development lifecycle, leading architectural discussions, and mentoring other engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain highly reliable engineering systems and distributed environments for engineers to deploy bits and validate changes end to end.
  • Advance the use of AI and emerging technologies across the software development lifecycle to shift quality left and improve engineering velocity.
  • Build automation for production deployment, targeting zero touch wherever possible.
  • Lead architecture and design discussions for complex products, own design decisions, and define test strategies that ensure solution quality.
  • Partner with stakeholders such as project managers, technical leads, and internal customers to define requirements and translate them into technical designs.
  • Lead debugging and root cause efforts across orgs and teams, applying coding patterns that improve code quality and bring issues to closure.
  • Produce extensible, maintainable code with a focus on security, reliability, diagnosability, and performance, and mentor others in identifying dependencies and doing the same.
  • Collaborate with and influence engineers within the team and across Microsoft, sharing learnings from investigations and advocating new approaches to current problems.
  • Ensure compliance visibility through audit trails and maintain a working understanding of applicable regulations.
  • Contribute to product vision, roadmap, and planning, support partner team integration ahead of go live, and participate in the on call rotation to maintain service health.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
  • Must pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience working on infrastructure, engineering systems, and deployments supporting development of large-scale enterprise-class distributed systems software.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment working with several teams to develop and maintain reliable environments and infrastructure services.
  • Proven track record in delivering reliable, scalable and highly performant end-to-end solutions.
  • Excellent communication and demonstrated ability to drive cross-team improvements.
  • Hands-on engineering experience developing and managing scalable cloud services across technologies such as Azure, AWS or GCP.
