Master Thesis Student - Kitagawa diagrams for defect requirements of highly stressed cast parts

Manufacturing & Production · Production & Assembly · Manufacturing Engineering

In short

This Master Thesis Student position involves investigating Kitagawa diagrams for defect requirements in highly stressed cast parts. The role includes literature review, experimental fatigue growth tests, and developing a calculation module. Suitable for students in Materials Science or Solid Mechanical Engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a Literature Review of Kitagawa–Takahashi Diagram: Experiments and Simulations.
  • Study TRATON's procedure for setting casting defect requirements.
  • Perform fatigue growth experiments of selected cast materials.
  • Study and develop several aspects of the calculation module, including loads, short crack behaviour, and geometry factors.
  • Validate the module via actual mechanical tests and literature data.

Requirements

  • Student at the degree of master of engineering
  • Education in Materials science or Solid mechanical engineering
  • Finite Element Method (FEM) for solid mechanics
  • Fatigue and fracture mechanics
  • Python programming
  • Material science
  • Castings
  • Experience with Abaqus
  • Experience with HyperMesh/Simsolid

Desired Qualifications

  • This thesis is suitable for one student.
  • Number of students: 1-2
  • Estimated time required: 20-24 weeks
  • Required Travel: 0%
  • Workplace: On-site

Benefits

  • Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future.
