Master's thesis: Modelling the magnetic physics package for a SQUID-based differential gravimeter

Technology, Data & Digital · Software & Web Development · Software Engineering

In short

Master's thesis project focused on modelling the magnetic physics package of a SQUID-based differential gravimeter using COMSOL Multiphysics. The study will analyze design challenges, investigate test-mass dynamics, and provide recommendations for a future experimental prototype. This is an internship suitable for MSc students in Engineering Physics with a strong interest in electromagnetism and numerical modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate a COMSOL model of a single superconducting test mass with levitation and sensing coils.
  • Extend the model to a differential two-mass configuration, quantifying magnetic cross-coupling and parasitic forces.
  • Investigate and optimize test-mass and coil geometries, including dimensions, positioning, separation, and coil-to-mass distances.
  • Investigate the sensitivity of the system to geometrical tolerances, misalignments, and asymmetries.
  • Investigate the effects of superconducting housing and magnetic screening.
  • Evaluate the validity of the ideal Meissner approximation and investigate non-ideal superconducting effects.
  • Develop an analytical model of the test-mass dynamics and combine it with finite-element results.
  • Investigate the system's response to realistic operating conditions, including gravitational signals.
  • Combine results into a quantitative assessment and provide design recommendations for a future prototype.

Requirements

  • MSc student in Engineering Physics or a closely related field.
  • Strong interest in electromagnetism, superconductivity, numerical modelling, and precision measurement.
  • Comfortable working independently with mathematical and computational physics.
  • Motivated to combine analytical modelling with numerical simulations.
  • Enrolled in an MSc-level programme at a Swedish university.
  • Eligible to undertake a 30-credit Master's thesis.
  • Solid background in electromagnetic field theory and analytical mechanics.
  • Good proficiency in written and spoken English.

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience with COMSOL Multiphysics is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Previous experience with FEM methods is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Previous experience with circuit theory is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Previous experience with superconductivity is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Previous experience with SQUIDs is advantageous but not mandatory.

Benefits

  • 30 ECTS credits
  • 39 990 SEK compensation after project completion and approval.
