Master's thesis: Inverter-Driven Oscillations in the Nordic power system: existing and future challenges

Agriculture, Energy & Environment · Environmental Services · Sustainability

In short

Master's thesis project focused on analyzing and mitigating Inverter-Driven Oscillations (IDI) in the Nordic power system. The project involves power system modeling, simulation using PowerFactory and Python, and developing control strategies for inverter-based resources.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the dynamics of the Nordic power system test model under various operating and control scenarios.
  • Identify appropriate test disturbances.
  • Assess the properties of IDIs appearing under these changing scenarios.
  • Identify key properties leading to unwanted oscillations through sensitivity studies.
  • Propose and demonstrate a control mitigation strategy by controlling inverters to mitigate oscillations.

Requirements

  • Ongoing MSc studies in Sweden.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
  • Power system analysis and stability-related courses.
  • Knowledge of dynamical systems.
  • Knowledge of power electronics.
  • Experience with control engineering.
  • Basic experience with power system modelling.
  • Programming knowledge, preferably Python.

Desired Qualifications

  • State-of-the-art Nordic RMS test system model available in PowerFactory with a scenario exemplifying the IDI.
  • Initial Python scripts for running the test system and automating sensitivity analysis, multiple contingencies, and operating points.
  • Literature supporting the work.

Benefits

  • Compensation of 39,990 SEK after project completion and approval.
  • Access to NU-ACTIS project meetings.
  • Discussions with academic and industry partners.
  • Exposure to industry expertise from Hitachi Energy Sweden.
