Master Thesis - Control Architecture for X-in-1 Power Electronics

Construction, Engineering & Trades · Civil & Industrial Engineering · Mechanical Engineering · Electrical Engineering · Embedded Systems

In short

This Master's thesis project focuses on developing an adaptive embedded software architecture for electric construction machines using heterogeneous multicore MCUs. You will research how to safely control configurable power stages while enabling faster software evolution, contributing to sustainable transport solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an adaptive embedded software architecture for electric construction machines using heterogeneous multicore MCUs.
  • Examine how general-purpose, lockstep safety, specialized control, communication, security, and AI resources can support an integrated X-in-1 power-electronics system.
  • Maintain deterministic behavior, functional safety, freedom from interference, and scalability.
  • Compare architecture using dedicated power devices with alternatives using one or two reconfigurable power stages for EMD, OBC, DC/DC, and work functions.
  • Determine how MCU cores, peripherals, memory, and accelerators should be allocated for each hardware configuration and operating mode.

Requirements

  • Master students in Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering, Mechatronics, Embedded systems Engineering or similar.
  • Knowledge and interest of Power electronics and embedded control.
  • Curious, open-minded, and interested in collaborating across different areas and with people with another background.
  • Thesis Level: Master
  • Language: English

Desired Qualifications

  • Research challenge: How can heterogeneous MCU resources safely control configurable power stages while enabling faster software evolution?
  • Assess whether strong hardware and software partitioning can reduce repeated verification and certification effort without weakening the safety case.
  • Explore trade-offs among utilization, performance, safety, availability, software complexity, cost, and development effort.
  • Investigate if an NPU can support bounded online calibration or adaptation with measurable benefits and without affecting safety-critical real-time behavior.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future.
  • Work with next-gen technologies and collaborative teams.
  • Mainly located at our office in Eskilstuna.
  • Be part of Volvo Group and contribute to a better and more resilient society.
