AWS Infrastructure Services seeks a Principal Engineer in Mumbai, India to manage and operate mission-critical data centers. This role involves overseeing electrical, mechanical, and firefighting systems, leading teams, and driving operational excellence in a challenging, fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Own and manage mission-critical facilities, including vendor management, rack capacity, construction, maintenance, and emergency changes.
- Participate in and be responsible for future capacity, availability, and other projects for assigned sites.
- Review, evaluate, and provide feedback on designs to mitigate safety, security, and availability risks.
- Prepare and implement countermeasures for natural disasters and emergency response, acting as an incident commander.
- Review, evaluate, and proactively identify risks and vulnerabilities in data center designs and operations.
- Build and report on team metrics and KPIs, driving continuous improvement.
- Develop team structure, document headcount, drive hiring, and build a strong team through delegation and development.
Requirements
- 12+ years of management experience.
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems in critical data center operations (feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS, ATS, PDU, chillers, pumps, AHUs, CRAC units).
- Experience with large-scale mechanical and power systems.
- Experience hiring, developing, and managing high-performing technical teams.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering best practices including breaker coordination studies, switchgear sequence of operation, and NEC code.
- Experience owning the operation of a mission-critical team or product.
- Experience with large-scale technical operations or compute farms.
- Experience with process improvement techniques such as Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma.
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to understand electrical systems and read/write Single Line Diagrams (SLD).
- Experience with supply systems of power substations, transformers, switchgears, VFI-class UPS, DRUPS, PDU, ATS, STS, SLA or VRLA battery and related systems.
- Experience with fuel systems related to diesel/gas turbine generators, surge control circuits, active harmonic filters, battery monitoring systems, branch circuit monitoring systems, SCADA systems.
- Experience with mechanical systems including CRAC/CRAH, AHU, chillers, cooling towers, storage tanks, heat exchangers, plumbing systems, pumps, valves, duct systems, fans, dampers, fire detection and extinguishing systems, drainage systems, building monitoring systems, automatic control systems.
- Experience and deep understanding with change management, incident management, problem management, vendor management, risk management, asset management, energy management, BCP, maintenance planning, budgeting, reporting, and PDCA cycle.
- Experience in managing and operating multiple data centre sites.
- Ability to represent the country for global initiatives and work with cross-functional teams.
