Responsibilities
- Design, build, and develop custom automation equipment and tooling.
- Perform hands-on mechanical, electrical, and controls development.
- Research and learn the automation equipment market.
- Develop automation solutions using a build-from-scratch approach or by modifying existing equipment.
- Design and implement custom features and enhancements to existing equipment.
- Own the prototype-to-production lifecycle.
- Troubleshoot and debug mechanical, electrical, software, and system-level issues.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Quality, and suppliers.
- Create and maintain technical documentation.
- Identify and implement continuous improvement opportunities.
- Partner with Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Production teams to identify automation opportunities.
- Observe and analyze existing manufacturing processes to define requirements and concepts.
- Translate operational requirements into practical automation solutions.
- Lead the hands-on development of automation solutions, including concept generation, design trade studies, prototyping, testing, and iterative refinement.
- Evaluate existing equipment and processes for modification or enhancement.
- Support deployment of automation into production, including debugging and optimization.
- Act as a technical problem solver during production challenges.
- Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to integrate externally sourced equipment.
- Contribute to standardization and reuse of automation concepts, designs, and components.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or similar field.
- 7+ years of Engineering Equipment Development experience.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Dependable team player, able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, and proficient at conflict resolution.
- Demonstrated experience in hands-on design, build, and modification of automation equipment in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Proven ability to translate operational problems into practical automation solutions.
- Experience developing automation systems using a hybrid approach, including modifying commercial off-the-shelf equipment and adding custom features.
- Strong background in mechanical and/or electrical system design.
- Experience building and iterating prototypes, proof-of-concept systems, and production automation.
- Working knowledge of automation controls, sensors, actuators, motion systems, vision systems, and industrial safety concepts.
- Strong collaboration skills with Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and external suppliers.
- Ability to document designs, modifications, and build standards clearly.
Desired Qualifications
- Vision systems experience a plus.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, continuous improvement, or process optimization concepts as they relate to automation.
