As a Senior Software Engineer at Microsoft Communications AI Lab, you will build and scale AI-powered tools to help communicators understand audiences, create content, and make decisions. You will collaborate with various teams to transform business problems into working solutions, applying modern AI engineering and responsible AI practices.

Responsibilities

  • Build agents, workflow automations, data integrations, and applications for research, media intelligence, narrative analysis, content workflows, measurement, and knowledge discovery.
  • Partner with users to clarify requirements, create prototypes, gather feedback, and improve solutions.
  • Write, test, debug, and document maintainable code.
  • Integrate internal and external data sources using secure APIs and authentication methods.
  • Develop evaluation frameworks for accuracy, reliability, grounding, safety, and usefulness.
  • Implement validation, error handling, access controls, monitoring, and human review processes.
  • Create technical documentation, reusable components, and shared building blocks.
  • Partner with communications, product, engineering, security, privacy, legal, and Responsible AI stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with external suppliers and partners to design and develop third-party solutions.
  • Embody Microsoft's culture and values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Equivalent experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience building and shipping software, automation, data products, or AI-enabled applications beyond the prototype stage.
  • Experience with Large Language Models, agents, retrieval, tool calling, structured outputs, or related AI application patterns.
  • Experience working with application programming interfaces, authentication, enterprise data sources, testing, debugging, and source control.
  • Experience building internal enterprise tools or workflow products in collaboration with non-technical users.
  • Experience evaluating AI systems for quality, grounding, safety, reliability, and user value.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio, Power Platform, or comparable technologies.
  • Experience working with communications teams to plan, develop, approve, distribute, and assess their work.
  • Experience applying machine learning or data techniques to large volumes of text, audience information, or other unstructured business data.

Benefits

  • The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year.
  • The base pay range for this role in the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation.
