Volvo Group is seeking two MSc students for a thesis project on robust traction control of heavy vehicle drivetrains for various road surfaces. The project involves modeling, system identification, controller development, and simulation, utilizing MATLAB. The thesis starts in January 2027, with applications due by September 30, 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate previous work in traction control.
  • Develop a basic model of the drivetrain including shafts, gears, and tires driving on different surfaces.
  • Conduct system identification for current truck drivetrains using data collected from trucks.
  • Develop controllers for controlling the power source torque/speed (electric or internal combustion).
  • Test controller performance using a simulation environment provided by Volvo Trucks, considering robustness and computation requirements.
  • Optimize controllers for low computation load for use in an ECU.
  • Potentially test final controllers on a real truck if time and resources permit.

Requirements

  • Control theory skills.
  • System identification skills.
  • Signal processing skills.
  • Good mathematical skills.
  • To be recommended for two students with controls and system identification profile.

  • Interest in mathematical modeling is seen as a benefit.
