Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to provide core mechanical engineering expertise for datacenter infrastructure. This role involves designing and managing complex mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and BAS controls, for new constructions, expansions, and retrofits worldwide. The position requires strong leadership, collaboration, and technical skills to deliver best-in-class cloud infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Provide key input to other organizations and internal stakeholders as a Subject Matter Expert.
- Design datacenter HVAC cooling systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems, and mechanical BAS controls.
- Develop specifications and drawings for all mechanical systems and network topology.
- Lead mechanical workgroups with representatives from AE firms and key stakeholders.
- Travel to sites, conduct Factory Witness Testing, engage with vendors, and oversee commissioning.
- Make design decisions for new construction, expansions, retrofits, and upgrades.
- Engage with and manage external design consultants, running design workshops.
- Collaborate with Global Technical Governance, Global Strategy, and DC Operations teams.
- Lead the delivery of mechanical system design for first-of-kind datacenter prototypes.
- Work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment.
- Maintain integrity, be methodical, detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or greater in Mechanical Engineering.
- Professional Engineer Mechanical Engineering certification.
- Minimum of 9 years of experience in consulting engineering.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience as a lead engineer, focusing on datacenter design projects.
- Experience designing complex sequences of operations for mechanical systems in building automation systems.
- Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes for hyperscale datacenter environments.
- Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions.
- Ability to analyze technical challenges, establish consensus, and drive decision-making.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical presentations.
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain high quality standards.
- Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations.
- Ability to prepare and present using MS Office software packages.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally.
- Must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including Microsoft Cloud Background Check.
Desired Qualifications
- At least 15 years of technical experience designing complex mechanical systems.
- At least 12 years of datacenter design experience in a consulting role.
- Experience with designing cooling systems for liquid-cooled IT hardware.
