Amazon is seeking a Sr. Design Technologist III to lead Generative AI initiatives, including training foundational models for design tasks and building custom AI tools from scratch. This role involves defining the technical roadmap for AI-driven content generation, partnering with science and creative teams, and operating with high ambiguity to influence technical direction.

Responsibilities

  • Lead training, fine-tuning, and evaluation of foundational models for design and visual content tasks.
  • Architect and build production-grade GenAI tools and platforms from scratch.
  • Define the technical roadmap for AI-powered content generation at scale.
  • Drive adoption of Generative AI across creative production workflows.
  • Partner with applied scientists, ML engineers, and creative leaders.
  • Design, train, fine-tune, and evaluate foundational models and LLMs for image generation, video synthesis, style transfer, and content enhancement.
  • Develop and optimize AI pipelines leveraging cloud-based ML platforms.
  • Lead research efforts to evaluate emerging models, architectures, and techniques.
  • Establish best practices for prompt engineering, model evaluation, data curation, and quality benchmarking.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior design technologists.
  • Collaborate with applied science teams, product managers, and creative leadership.
  • Operate with high ambiguity, make sound technical judgments independently, and influence across teams.

Requirements

  • Experience with Machine Learning and Large Language Model fundamentals, including architecture, training/inference lifecycles, and optimization of model execution, or experience building complex software systems successfully delivered to customers.
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design.
  • Experience building production software applications or understanding software development, distributed systems, and systems architecture.
  • Knowledge of architectural concepts and algorithms, schedule tradeoffs and new opportunities with technical team members.
  • Experience with training and deploying machine learning systems to solve large-scale optimizations, or experience with data infrastructures: relational analytic DBMS, Elastic-Search, and Big Data EMR/EC2/Glue/Lambda.
  • Have an online portfolio demonstrating strong visual design skills and advertising experience across a range of media and platforms, along with work that reflects your design process.
  • 6+ years of front-end technologist, engineer, or UX prototyper experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or above in computer science or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience with AI inference and training platforms (Fal AI, Replicate, Hugging Face, AWS SageMaker, or similar).

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of databases and AWS database services: ElasticSearch, Redshift, DynamoDB.
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team.
  • Experience within specific technology domain areas (e.g. software development, cloud computing, systems engineering, infrastructure, security, networking, data & analytics).
  • Experience architecting/operating solutions built on AWS.
  • Experience as a trainer and ability to manage a classroom of learners.
  • Knowledge of technologies such as JavaScript/NodeJS, HTML/CSS, Responsive/Adaptive Design.
  • Experience leading and influencing your team or organization.
  • Experience working across teams and influencing teams that are not your own.
  • Experience using managed ML/AI solutions.
  • Experience in mentoring, leading, or managing more junior engineers.
  • Master's degree, or PhD and 6+ years of building machine learning models for business application experience.
