Specialist Engineer – Ergonomics (Physical Ergonomics – Commercial Vehicles)
Role Summary
We are looking for a Specialist Engineer – Ergonomics to take ownership of physical ergonomics development for cab and driver workspace in commercial vehicle programs. The role focuses on delivering a well-balanced ergonomics features driving position, visibility, entry/exit, resting comfort, and working comfort, ensuring both feature targets and regulatory compliance across global markets.
This role will work closely with cross-functional teams and will be responsible for translating market needs into clear engineering requirements and validating them through virtual tools and physical evaluations.
Required Skills & Experience
Strong experience in commercial vehicle ergonomics / cab development
Define the Feature Requirements based on the Project pre-requisites
Understand the Project requirements
Hands-on experience in:
Driver packaging studies
Visibility and regulatory assessments
Entry/exit and comfort evaluations
Working Comfort & Resting Comfort
Good understanding of SAE standards and global regulations for US, Europe and Asia
Practical experience with CATIA, RAMSIS/DELMIA, CAVA, VRED, IPS
Exposure to global projects and cross-cultural requirements
Work with the cross Functional teams across globe
Work with the Complete Vehicle Teams
Experience in conducting Driver Clinics
Should create Value addition in the activities
Work towards Continuous Improvement in the Projects and Process

Key Responsibilities
1. Driving Position: Occupant packaging studies
Define and develop driver workspace with focus on seat position, reach, posture, and accommodation
Establish ergonomic targets using SAE recommended practices:
J1100 (vehicle dimensions)
J826 (H-point, manikin positioning)
J941 (eyellipse and vision reference)
J1516 / J1517 (accommodation tools and seat track)
J198 (wiper zones reference in relation to vision)
J4002, J4004 (extended accommodation/packaging guidelines)
Perform accommodation analysis to ensure coverage across global anthropometric ranges
Drive seat track, steering, pedal, and control reach alignment
2. Seat Ergonomics
Define and evaluate:
Seat cushion parameters (length, angle, stiffness, contour)
Backrest parameters (height, angle, lumbar support)
Headrest position and adjustability
Seat adjustment ranges and usability
Seat control button accessibility and placement
Work closely with seat suppliers and internal teams to balance comfort, adjustability, and packaging constraints
3. Visibility
Lead visibility development for compliance and performance:
Direct visibility (forward, sidewards, downward)
Indirect visibility (mirror systems)
Work with regulations:
FMVSS 101, 104
IS 15802
ECE R46, R43, UN R167
TFL DVS requirements
Conduct:
Mirror field of view assessments
Wiper coverage evaluations
Glare and reflection checks from glass and interior surfaces
Use tools like CAVA, VRED, and physical validation methods for concept and verification
4. Entry & Exit (Ingress / Egress)
Develop and validate step layout, grab handles, and door access
Ensure compliance with:
EU Regulation 130/2012
FMCSR 399.201–211
Evaluate ease of ingress/egress using:
Anthropometric data
Virtual manikins (RAMSIS / Human Builder)
Physical mock-ups where required
Focus on safety, ease of use, and robustness across different user populations
5. Resting Comfort
Define sleeper area and co-driver comfort requirements:
Bunk dimensions and usability
Storage accessibility and efficiency
Interior lighting positions and usability
Walkthrough space between driver and bunk area
Passenger comfort during co-driving situations
Ensure the cabin supports extended usage as a living space
6. Working Comfort (Service & Access)
Evaluate and improve usability for tasks performed outside the cab:
Back-of-cab access (trailer connections, cable handling)
Front access (windshield cleaning, wiper maintenance)
Ground-level and external service interactions
Validate reach, posture, and safety during maintenance and operational activities
7. Simulation, Validation & Tools
Perform studies using:
CATIA V5 –concept and packaging
RAMSIS / Delmia – Ergonomics posture simulations and analysis
CAVA – visibility and regulation checks
VRED – reflection and light simulation
Conduct:
Virtual validation (including VR where applicable)
Physical evaluations and benchmarking
Competitor vehicle analysis
8. Project & Feature Ownership
- Own ergonomics deliverables from concept to production
- Define clear targets and validation plans
- Track progress through design phases and ensure timely closure of issues
- Support global platforms across Europe, US, and India
9. Collaboration
Work closely with:
Cab engineering teams
Product design
Certification.
Provide clear inputs to guide design decisions early in the development cycle
Work with Cross Functional team Locally and Globally
